Advocating For Children With Learning Disabilities
Your child is diagnosed with a learning disability. What do you do? Many parents find themselves asking this question and become easily overwhelmed at the prospect of enrolling their child in special education. But becoming a strong advocate for your child is critical, say experts, who offer this advice for parents:
*Do your homework and learn as much about the diagnosis as you can.
*Talk with your child’s teachers regularly and ask for regular progress reports. Learn more about what is being taught at your child’s school and how it is being taught.
*Celebrate your child’s achievements. Reward your child with praise, kind words, smilies and pats on the back when they complete a task.
