Poster girl for handling developmental disabilities
When psychiatric experts, mental health workers and advocates meet in Vancouver today for a conference on developmental disabilities, they will receive a conference brochure with a painting by Riia Talve on the cover.
The painting is a colourless portrait of a sad young woman looking down on herself as if in need of a hug.
While Talve today is happy and healthy, the problems she has faced in her 25 years are representative of a major theme of the conference — that people with developmental disabilities have a higher risk of mental disorders.
