The Not on MY Face Sun Safety Giveaway
We took our son to the beach for the first time when he was about 7 month old. We didn’t know then that he was sensitive to a lot of sensory input. We didn’t know that having his feet on sand was pure torture. We didn’t know that lotions and textures were an issue for him. He couldn’t express it then but as he got older (about 18 months) we started to figure out many “normal” things bothered him. Loud sounds were upsetting, bare feet on grass, eating turkey, that sort of thing.
So when it came time to lube up for the pool or the beach we often had a battle (frankly, he’s 11 and he still rolls his eyes and protests but I do think that is just him being a kid). We were fans of hats, shirts and anything else that kept us from having to spend more time putting sunscreen on him, which we religiously did because he was a very pale kid.
When he was around 4 we discovered that if he could control some of it it helped so we were thrilled to find the sunscreen sticks. By then he didn’t so much mind us putting it on his body but he never really took to us getting it on his face so the stick allowed him to do it in a more controlled, safe way.
Now that he’s post kidney transplant and on drugs that make him more susceptible to future skin cancer we’re even more thankful for devices and products that let him be outside in the sun safely. So part of our Sun Safety week will be this giveaway of sun products. A towel, sunglasses, sunscreen and sun stick (we love them and have them all over the place) and just to add to the mix a fun and helpful thing, too. There’s a canvas doorknob bag (I made it! I know! Crafty! It’s a curse!) and fabric markers for you and the kid/s to decorate. Leave the bag on the doorknob as a reminder to put sunscreen on or hanging there makes it easy to grab on the go.
It’s worth about $35 bucks. Can’t beat that right now during the summer, right? Make sure that you are a registered user and leave a comment about a favorite summertime activity and we’ll chose a commenter on Friday, June 11, 2010 5:00PST.
* That main picture for this article is of my daughter poolside and here’s the whole version. Yeah, see her curled up toes? She was already in therapy a long time by then! She wasn’t moving then and so it was easy to be at the pool and plop her down with stacking cups of water. Ah, the easy days!

Great (and timely!) prize pack!
My favorite summer activity, without kids, is laying on the beach, at the ocean, and listening to the waves…as in, breathing deeply with each incoming wave and exhaling as it returns to sea. I am a dork, but the ocean calms me…not so much when you have to keep an eye on kids…I just cannot relax with kids and any body of water so it isnt tons of fun.
I love splash parks for little ones and sprinklers are a fun time here too (Try one under the trampoline for extra fun-we have a net, be careful though!)
Our 5-year-old, Ava, is totally blind and the water is one place where she feels completely free. Free from the typical orientation and mobility constraints of walking on solid ground and using a cane. In the pool, she feels completely at ease to float and swim wherever she wants. This is why swimming is our #1 favorite summer activity! The pool is also a place where Ava and her sister, Lucie, can connect and play together, splashing and sharing water toys. It’s magical!
HI Megan! Have you added your blog to our links yet? We would love it if you would! https://supportforspecialneeds.com/site-how-to/how-do-i-add-links-to-the-site/
We like the pool too. But our absolute favorite summer time activity, is the family walk after dinner. It’s nice for lots of reasons. It’s light late enough that we can all go, it’s not too hot (usually), we get to see fireflies, and spend some nice “neighborhood time”. We just love it.
With 4 little ones in tow, we prefer something easy and inexspensive, so the park is our favorite place to go during the summer and a local trail and waterfall would be our next choice.
We have joined a pool for the first time this year, and it’s already been a lot of fun.
Our favorite summer hang out is at the pool. The kids can play for hours and the water keeps everyone cool.

We have a lot of favorite summertime activities, but one of my favorites is eating dinner on our deck. Our kids take their plates out and we eat, watch the birds and squirrels, have some quality time together and sometimes talk to the neighbors. The kids have a great time and the animals clean up the mess they leave!
We love to take walks in the evening suring the summer. It is so nice for us to get out and just walk around…
We took Aidan to the beach for the first time last year and he hated being in the ocean. I am not sure if it was the waves or just not feeling comfortable with me holding him. He finally calmed down when we would sit in the surf and lean him up against us. His little legs would get buried in the sand and he would just be so relaxed.
