Special schools are struggling to find teachers who have been trained to work with children with special educational needs (SEN). Research carried out by education charity Policy Exchange revealed that just 5 per cent of special schools found it easy to recruit teachers with the right training. Many teachers and support staff in special schools do not have qualifications in SEN, despite the fact that more than a million children are now assessed as having special needs.
According to Government figures, 220,890 pupils in England have a statement of SEN. However, there are an estimated one and a half million more pupils that have special educational needs but do not have a statement. Local Education Authorities usually provide a statement of a child’s special educational needs if they decide that all the special help a child needs cannot be provided from within a school’s resources.
