Sweet Trip to Build-A-Bear Workshop®

January 17, 2012 in Featured, From Julia, Giveaways by Julia Roberts

Bakeshop Bears (my kids' personal favorites)

Attention! Megan (of Miles), GeekDad and CJ –  congrats to each of you winning a $25 gift card from Build-A-Bear Workshop!

When I was pregnant with my youngest, Quinnlin, I took her brother Gage to Build-A-Bear Workshop® to make his new sister a Welcome-to-the-Family present. That was over 10 years ago and we’ve been Build-A-Bear fans ever since. The kids have made a lot of animals over the years… and we’ve celebrated more than one birthday creating loveable friends.

When Build-A-Bear asked me if the kids might like to go and create a bear named Cookie, Cupcake and Donut or maybe a Kissing Puppy and Kitty, it took me about 1 second to say yes. I mean, perfect treat before Valentine’s Day, right?

A two hearted wish, then inside Billy they went!

Hearts for the insides...my son requested 2, put them to his forehead and sent good thoughts to Billy.

We had a great time over our Winter break at one of our local Build-A-Bear Workshops where Gage picked Sprinkle Donut (it was blue and a “boy” after all, now named Billy) and Quinnlin picked Confetti Cupcake Bear now named Sprinkles. Confused yet? While some might think my son is a bit old for Build-A-Bear Workshop but you won’t hear that come out of our mouths. Stuff animals have been a mainstay for the kids through their medical journey as comforting friends. “Billy” is nearby as he sleeps comfortably in a hammock made with the back of a chair and my son’s bed frame and “Sprinkles” is already a favorite friend.

“Bath” time…and laughing! Note the pretend eating of the donut!

While there Gage noticed a must have accessory – a guitar – high up on a display (he’s taking lessons) and before I knew it, he’d sent an employee in back who happily retrieved it for him and reloaded several on a shelf, all the while giving him kudos for helping make sure the store was in check! Their new friends wear simple clothes of jeans, Sprinkles with a “peace” shirt and Billy sports an orange hoodie.

Build-A-Bear is letting me give away THREE $25 dollar gift cards for a little one you love, to create a little one they love.

Leave a comment about a favorite stuff animal of your child or yours before January 20, 5pm EST and we’ll randomly pick three of you to win a $25 gift card so you can create a new friend! Enter to win now!

Success!

Announcing! I’m absolutely thrilled to tell you that I’ll be sharing Quinnlin’s story of navigating the world of special needs along with a special Build-A-Bear Workshop friend for the next several months on their new blog…which is coming soon! Of course, we’ll let you know when it’s live!

Disclosure: This post was sponsored by Build-A-Bear Workshop and because they’re terrific to work with 3 gift card winners will get to benefit from it, too!

Prices: Kisses For You Puppy and Kitty, 2 for $30 or $18 each. Bakeshop Bears, 2 for $35 or $20 each.

We may have a girl whose name begins with Q in our house who will love to learn that on January 20th (this week!) Build-A-Bear Workshop is releasing their new Victoria Justice bear!

Do you know what Bearville is? It’s Build-A-Bear Workshops’s online version of their friend  accessible by a code my kids both received on their bears. Yeah, they loved that too.

Also, because I think about my kids putting things in their mouths past age 3 (sensory seekers!), be sure to check and see which animals are noted as safe for 3 and under!

A Weighted Blanket Giveaway! Again!

May 4, 2011 in Featured, Giveaways, Product Reviews by Julia Roberts

Gage says, "I like it how I like it!"

Repeating our first contest…we’re giving away The Magic Blanket™

A few years ago when my son was having his first bout of acute depression it manifested in numerous ways, including interrupted sleep, another blogger told me about the weighted blanket. I can’t believe that in all the years working with multiple therapists I’d never heard about it (weighted collars for PT therapy, yes) so I started doing some research and found The Magic Blanket™ through google searches. I searched around and from the sites I found, The Magic Blanket prices were most competitive.

What I liked about the site? They told me what weight blanket I needed for Gage’s weight (under 70 lbs at the time) and we could choose the fabric and pattern. They custom make a lot of them and so I ordered a camouflage, 10 pound blanket for Gage and he loved it (we’ve since purchased at second at 15lbs). Gage is somewhat complicated…sensory issues, hyper, depressed, delayed. If a weighted blanket could at least help him rest, well, then I was willing to try it.

I had no idea that weighted blankets could help with some of the issues that Gage has but it does. To this day where Gage sleeps, the blanket goes (Honestly, camping? Yes.). All 15 lbs. of it.

Their website says,

Weighted blankets, like The Magic Blanket™, have shown to generate proprioceptive input on our bodies. For many people, this input causes the brain to release neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, among others. These neurotransmitters released by the brain have naturally calming effects, which have proven to be beneficial for people experiencing sensory integration disorder, anxiety, stress, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADHD, and Rett Syndrome. It’s important to note that The Magic Blanket is not a substitute for care from an occupational therapist or mental health professional.

Here’s how you can win a Magic Weighted Blanket!

First register as a user if you aren’t one and we’ll enter your name into a random drawing. We’ll include every single person who (is and) becomes a registered user before next Wednesday, May 11, 2011 5PM, PST! The winner will get to pick the weight – an 8, 10, 12 or 15 lbs blanket in any pattern in a fleece style and they will ship it for FREE. Blanket value $75-115.

Want another entry? Here are two more ways to win:

  1. Tweet the contest! Then comment back here with a link to your Twitter status so we can check it out.
  2. Blog about the contest. Let your readers know about Support for Special Needs and our terrific community resources. Then comment here to let us know you did it.

Keith at The Magic Blanket™ jumped at the chance to bring a weighted blanket to one of our community members (AGAIN!). Want to talk to him about one for your kid (or yourself) if you don’t win? Call Keith at (877) 711-2020.

Good luck!

One Year! Celebrate with us!

May 2, 2011 in Featured, Giveaways by Julia Roberts

We’re so happy to announce that yesterday was our ONE YEAR anniversary here at Support for Special Needs. May 1 we launched the site and we’re so happy we did. It’s been extremely rewarding to provide resources, but also to get to know so many people who don’t mind sharing their experiences with others…and with me.

We’re happy to be giving away some neat things and all of them are from companies that have supported our efforts over the year so they are worth mentioning! So, we hope you will dig around the site and come back each day to see what sponsors are helping us!

Twelve Giveaways for 12 Months!

#1 – Smiling (and clean teeth) are awesome! So is Firefly! My kids love these because they light up and I can use all the help I can get in them brushing their teeth. Honestly? People loved this giveaway when we did it last year so I asked the fine people at Firefly if we could get a bunch of them to giveaway. I wanted 12 to represent the 12 months, but then they said more! So we have 3 of each of these Firefly designs, 18 total,…Original, Baby FireFly, Spiderman, Peanuts, Hot Wheels and Barbie.

They are made of soft, high quality dupont bristles that won’t cause microscopic cuts to children’s delicate gums, are ergonomically sized for a child’s hands,  and the light stops functioning after approximately 3 months, indicating it is time to replace the toothbrush

Available at Target, Meijer’s, and drugstores and mass merchandisers nationwide, or apparently here at our site if you do something simple and are lucky!

You know what else is cool? They have a campaign started (April 12th) for new LIKEs on their Facebook page Firefly Toothbrush will donate $1 for each one up to $2,500, to the non-profit Smile Train.

*******Want 1 or more Firefly Toothbrushes? Just comment here and tell us you hate cavities. Or something else that is clever! (depending on how many enter, you could get more than one!) be sure to do it by Monday, 5pm EST*******

Wikki Stix Giveaway!

March 23, 2011 in Featured, Giveaways by Julia Roberts

I get a lot of press releases that come to Support for Special Needs.com because they may (or honestly may not and the press person is taking a long shot) be related to kids or special needs. I saw this one about Wikki Stix™ and had a flashback about them helping my son while he was fighting with anxiety.

I could tell you  what their press release said…”Wikki Stix, the first-ever line of colorful, moldable sticks that can be used to create anything a child can dream up.  Made and manufactured in the USA, the unique food grade, non-toxic wax and acrylic yarn formula was designed to stimulate a child’s imagination without parental concern over safety or clean-up.”

But I really want to tell you that they helped my son get through the day. We sent many packages to school with him to be pulled, bent, twisted and well, lost. Many, many packages because he isn’t so well organized. They are a little waxy and bendable and they offer hours of finger play to keep kids like my son occupied. For him it kept him from chewing his clothes or ripping up his shoes at school when it seemed he was most stressed out. Now that he’s gotten proper treatment for anxiety, we can play with them for how they were intended! Just for fun!

The press release continues to say “Simple to peel up and reposition, Wikki Stix foster a play environment that is mistake-proof and endless – there is no right or wrong way to play and the sky is the limit on what can be created.  If a child is not happy with the end result, simply unroll and start again.” I like that because my kids struggle with self-esteem and these aren’t hard to use with their abilities.

We’re giving away an activity set! Simply go to this topic in the Anything Goes Group and let us know what something your little one (or big one) busy when they (or we) need them to focus for a few minutes (or 15)!

We’re going to keep this open through Sunday, March 27 at midnight. Go! Share!

Wikki Stix products are sold at hundreds of retailers in every U.S. state and consumers can do a search by state on the website. The products are available internationally in Canada, Spain, Japan, Italy, England, Australia and France and online at www.wikkistix.com They do not contain lead, latex, peanut or nut oils. Unlike imitators in the marketplace, which are mostly made overseas, top-ranked Wikki Stix have always been proudly made in America.

Valentine’s What’s in a Name Giveaway

February 14, 2011 in Featured, Giveaways by Admin Dawn

Last month Anna of AJ’s Collection approached me about making a necklace to honor my kids, Noah and Madison. I was so excited because she also offered to create a necklace for one giveaway winner and we decided it would be the perfect contest to have for Valentine’s Day!

Anna began creating her jewelry as a hobby but her gorgeous designs soon garnered enough attention that she started her business. She makes necklaces, bracelets and even silver guitar picks. Her work is meant to celebrate family and so she stamps dates, names or words of wisdom on the charms. She also has many designs that include birth stones.

I chose a beautiful locket necklace with a single hidden pearl. On the front is a bird and inside are my kids’ names. Not only do I love it but my kids love to see me wear it. You can see my version on the front page of the site but I’m including a picture of the design in this entry, too.

Most of her creations are rendered in sterling silver but she has gold jewelry, too.

You also MUST check out her charm bracelets! I think these make great presents for kids, or even for a new baby, as a special keepsake.

Whether you want to win a necklace for yourself or for a loved one for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day (they have gifts for dads!) I hope you’ll enter the contest. All you need to do to win is go to the boards here and share the story behind your child’s name. We’ll pick one winner at random on Saturday (so you have until midnight PST Friday to enter!) and you will be able to order your gift!

We also encourage you to become a fan on AJ’s Collection’s Facebook page where you can keep up to date on new designs as well as future contests and giveaways. Definitely keep AJ’s Collection on your list for your next gift giving occasion or if you want to gift yourself — you will be so pleased with the results!

Cinda B Giveaway!

December 13, 2010 in Giveaways by Julia Roberts

Just to keep things interesting around here we decided to do another day’s giveaway before the Holidays. Cinda B was one of our first sponsors and supporters and they wanted to give our community members a chance to win 1 of 6 bags ranging from Catchalls to the popular Vacationer. These are from their collectible Vintage Collection.

First up! The Catchall purses; we have two to giveaway. The pink and the ivory (the pink has short handles and the ivory one has long). I personally have two of these and I love them. Did you know that they are water resistant? This means you can spill your kid’s liquid flavored meds in it and easily wash it. I know this because I’ve done it! They’ve also thrown in some check book covers for you!

Second! The Overnighter bag in Ivory — need I say more? Well, then I’d have to say curling/flat iron case because you’d get one of those too. You can pack your iron hot because it’s insulated. Cinda is brilliant, isn’t she? The Overnighter is the first bag I grab when we are on the way to the doctor or ER if I think we’re going to be there awhile. Just the perfect size!

Third! The Weekender — two lucky winners will  get one! We have a Roundabout Brown and an Ivory (pictured here) to giveaway. Great for weekends away or a couple of days with your kids in recovery, it’s roomy and has those great side pockets for your cell phone and candy bars.

Fourth, we have the Vacationer bag in Ivory, which honestly fits everything you might need for a trip! I’ve used mine for a week long trip as well as stuffed it full of my and my kid’s clothes for a shorter trip. Roomy pockets on the sides that fit books, iPods and snacks, you’ll love this bag. Plus you know what? You can fold these up and shove them in a closet for storage; they don’t take a ton of room.

Don’t know what to get someone? Give them a Cinda B…useful and beautiful! (I should know…I have 5 of them! But I still want more!)

For a chance to win one of these (winners chosen randomly) just go over to the Behavior group and let’s have a little fun, even when we talk about behaviors of our kids. Tell us a story that might have had your mortified but looking back is pretty funny. Like the time my kid pulled a fire alarm in preschool! Go here and share…

Thanks Cinda of Cinda B for sharing some of your bags with us!

American Girl Giveaway

November 29, 2010 in Giveaways by Admin Dawn

I can’t believe it! It’s our very last giveaway of the whole dang Great Big Wish List Giveaway!!! And we are ending on a high note with our American Girl giveaway! Here’s what’s on the list:

American Girl Craft Pack:

American Girl DVD Pack

American Girl Innerstar University Book Pack:

American Girl Historical Mystery & Crafty Book Pack

2010 Girl of the Year doll, Lanie

I’ll tell you, this has been a wee bit overwhelming (you may not know it but Julia and I do this web site on the side of the rest of our lives — meaning between and around the demands of our work, school, homeschool, kids’ school, freelance, family, health stuff, life stuff — and that’s why we sometimes may take a minute or two to get back to you!) but it has also been GREAT! Our goal was to make your holidays a little more fun and a little easier by gifting you some great toys and also alerting you to some wonderful things to add to your wish lists but also to help us get to know you and help you to get to know US (and the site)! And that has been absolutely totally worth it!!

To that end, here’s how you enter to win this contest!

  1. Head to your profile page (not sure how to get there? Look up at the light gray bar at the top of the page and click your avatar);

  2. Look at the left sidebar and you’ll see an Invite Anyone block;

  3. Invite anyone!

When you invite someone you will get this achievement. Achievements are just little fun rewards that people get when they do stuff on the site. When you invite a person to join us, you’ll automatically get the Bring a Friend achievement and we’ll pull winners from the people who are listed on the Bring a Friend page. Of course you can invite more than one friend (and we’d love it if you would!) but you just need to invite one to enter to win.

By the way, after you’ve invited people you can see the status of your invitations by going back to the Send Invite tab in your profile and choosing the little email icon. That will pull up the list of people you’ve sent invites to and tell you if they’ve registered. Pretty nifty, eh?
