If possible, I’d also ask specialists for recommendations of what pediatricians their patients see. Frequently, special needs families cluster to the handful of pediatricians capable of dealing with our sorts of […]

IEP and School Discussion 2 months, 1 week agoand now the other shoe drops. We finally have bus arrangements. A will be picked up at 8:15, and school starts at 8:45. THat’s not too bad.

IEP and School Discussion 2 months, 2 weeks agoSo….it remains to be seen how this plays out, but this may actually have been our most successful IEP meeting ever – I certainly came away from it feeling like they’d listened when I repeated myself over and […]

IEP and School Discussion 2 months, 2 weeks agoMichigan is a total disaster when it comes to Deaf & Hard of Hearing programs…and previous attempts at making connections there have been rebuffed. It’s so bad here that a recent article points out a young […]

IEP and School Discussion 2 months, 2 weeks agoBackground: A is almost 4. He had a trach until last summer. He is diagnosed as non-verbal – he says less than 10 words, but signs about 2 dozen words and understands several hundred.
We do not currently have […]

In reply to: Sherry posted an update Hello….I am new to this site and I have a quick (I’ll try) question…my son Zachoree (7) has Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and I recently found out about the different medicaid waiver interest […] ViewI’d get a copy of the letter the neuro sent, and then think about what things a nursing facility will do vs what you’d get at home. One on one nursing care would be a big one, I’d think – it looks like Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome involves lots of siezures, and I think that would mean you’d want someone paying very close attention.

Anything Goes: 7 months, 4 weeks agoMichigan has it. My son has a TEFRA waiver right now, but will lose it next year since his trach is now gone.

Anything Goes: 8 months, 2 weeks agoI know that my response to a family member’s molestation was similar to your feelings right now: who did it, and how do I get rid of them, preferably as painfully as possible? (and that’s the polite version of my take on it, nearly 20 years after the fact) If necessary, find a punching bag, [...]

Janet Callahan posted on the forum topic May be sensitive material. Question about Ex-Wife abuse allegations. in the group
Anything Goes: 9 months, 2 weeks agoA friend of ours had similar repeated reports by her ex, and eventually children’s services got tired of investigating, and reminded the ex that filing a false police report (which is what an abuse allegation is) is a crime. Her file has been flagged as “reports from anyone other than school or doctor are likely [...]

In reply to: Abby Hendrix posted an update in the group Anything Goes: I have a question and got frustrated trying to search through for a forum to put it in. My daughter’s therapists and teachers told us to apply for […] ViewIn at least some states, you have to be denied medicaid to qualify for a waiver, so it may not be a total loss just yet. Our caseworkers here didn’t know waivers existed, though, which was a problem in and of itself.

Caregiver Stress: 10 months, 3 weeks agoI’ve got 1 in the NICU, 1 who needs appointments to get trach & g-tube out, maternity leave ends in less than 3 weeks, and removing trach means no nursing, so we need a nanny by then. ARGH!

Life Beyond Limits-Raising Kids With Cerebral Palsy: 10 months, 3 weeks agoMy 3-year-old son had a grade 1 bleed right side bleed as a 27 weeker and was diagnosed with mild left hemiparesis last fall, though whether that diagnosis sticks remains to be seen, based on his improvements since then. My 5 week old baby girl (28 weeker, still in the NICU) also has a grade [...]

Preemies: 10 months, 3 weeks agoWe’re now the proud parents of 2 preemies – ”Acorn” is now 3 years old (former 27 weeker) and will be getting both his trach & g-tube out this summer, and ”Leaf” is our 5 week old 28 weeker, still in the NICU on CPAP.

Janet Callahan posted on the forum topic anyone know about Cerebral Palsy? in the group
Anything Goes: 1 year agoOur developmental doctor (a doctor of physical medicine & rehab, or PMR) says that it’s important for insurance to be more specific than just “CP” and I suspect that means many doctors forget that they need to be more helpful when talking with parents. I *love* our PMR – he’s great with my son, and [...]

I wouldn’t let one troll bother you too much. If he really wanted to understand life with a medically complex kid, he’d read first and judge later. He’s welcome to relive our 15 trips to the doctor, more than 30 phone calls, plus one ER visit, in 10 weeks this spring. Our pediatrician actively works [...]

I think we’re going to pull him out (and I don’t really need to hear more about how by doing so I’m damaging his chances at future academic success, speech developmen, or social skills) – first things [...]
