I hope you don’t mind, but I’m printing this out for future IEPs with our school. It’s clear to me that my son’s current special ed preschool just doesn’t get it, and he starts kindergarten at a new building in […]

As we’re beginning our AAC journey, I wish my son had access to others who use AAC devices. I think it would be a huge game changer for him.
Right now his school SLP and teacher act as if the device is a toy to […]

Janet Callahan replied to the forum topic Holiday (not) Fun in the group
Anything Goes 5 months, 2 weeks agoI’d say our biggest issue is people who don’t take my kids’ needs into account when planning holiday events. Like, a crowded expensive buffet dinner with a preschooler (likely SPD, nonverbal, eats like 10 […]

IEP and School Discussion 8 months, 1 week agoWe have an advocate, and the school is aware that if we file a complaint, we will win – an AAC device was written into the IEP in March, and my son still doesn’t have one….

IEP and School Discussion 10 months, 1 week agoUpdate: So…the promised AAC eval? Not done. The teacher? retired. ESY? 90 minutes 2 days a week, and so far daycare says his behavior is a disaster when he comes back from school – it’s all new people, so […]

In reply to: Janet Callahan posted an update in the group IEP and School Discussion I have a 4 year old in ECP (special ed preschool) through our local district. He is non-verbal. We entered the ECP program in March in order […] ViewThere’s a time limit for the initial eval, which they met. I’m not finding anything on a time limit for special evaluations that come out of an IEP meeting.

IEP and School Discussion 11 months, 3 weeks agoI have a 4 year old in ECP (special ed preschool) through our local district. He is non-verbal.
We entered the ECP program in March in order to get him more help on language and communication. He signs (not fluently, but several dozen signs compared to 3-5 identifiable spoken words).
No one in his classroom (teacher or aides) knows more than a…[Read more]

I thought there was a time limit they have to get the eval done, right? I think ours is 30 days, and then another 30 or 45 to get report and recs. (I think). Check your state’s rules.
If you have the request for the ACC eval in writing from that date 3 months ago, I would request/insist they do it over the summer. I know for a FACT they have…[Read more]

It must be handled the same way for timing…I would for sure push for it over the summer for fear of regression/time lost.
BOE summer office hours? Ours is open and they run a light crew at least for evals.

Anything Goes 12 months agoWe have 2 weeks left of school. Supposedly there’s ESY, but we don’t have a schedule yet, and it was only 2 mornings a week a couple years ago. A is staying in daycare 4 days a week when he’s not at ESY, and […]

Janet Callahan commented on the post, The Steps to Changing Pediatricians, on the site Support for Special Needs 1 year, 1 month ago
If possible, I’d also ask specialists for recommendations of what pediatricians their patients see. Frequently, special needs families cluster to the handful of pediatricians capable of dealing with our sorts of […]

In reply to: Sherry posted an update Hello….I am new to this site and I have a quick (I’ll try) question…my son Zachoree (7) has Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and I recently found out about the different medicaid waiver interest […] ViewI’d get a copy of the letter the neuro sent, and then think about what things a nursing facility will do vs what you’d get at home. One on one nursing care would be a big one, I’d think – it looks like Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome involves lots of siezures, and I think that would mean you’d want someone paying very close attention.
