First and foremost, I’m a mom of AWESOME four year old twins, both with various special needs.

Chananiah has classic autism. His issues are social and communicative. At four years old he can write full sentences in two languages and do first grade math but he will only say hello if you prompt him to. He will not speak unless you model a sentence and ask him to repeat it. I’m starting to try toilet training and it’s going NOWHERE. He’s finally willing to sit on the potty but he won’t make in it or tell me he WANTS to sit there (he never WANTS to sit there, with all the bribery in the world!). He does not engage with other children and at times bites them if they’re in his space. He obsessively alphabetizes and lines up anything with letters and numbers. One time he had a 20 minute temper tantrum because he had red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and brown crayons, but I couldn’t find the black crayon in my diaper bag. He’s in special ed and occupational and speech therapy. (update fall 2011— he’s now in an all autism class and he initiates lots of speech and calms down quickly— he still won’t make on the potty).

Reena has hypotonia, a speech delay, and probably dyspraxia and ADHD. Her issues are physical and auditory. She’s about two years behind with gross motor skills and wears cute little foot braces. She doesn’t seem to feel pain or hot/cold like other children do, so she never has any idea whether her diaper is wet or dry… I’m not even attempting potty training with her yet. She speaks full sentences but they’re always way out of context. “Reena, do you want the blue shirt or the red shirt?” “I want to go to the dentist today.” At first when the out of context speech started I started researching auditory processing disorder, but her special ed teachers think she’s probably ADHD— SUPER hyper and always thinking about something that has nothing to do with the topic at hand. She has random things she does— runs around in circles repeating nonsense mantras: “paaaa paaa paaa pitchy pitchy poooo” is her current favorite. She’s in special ed, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and private speech and physical therapy in addition to what she gets in preschool.
(update fall 2011– her behaviors got a LOT worse and we went forward with getting an adhd diagnosis (she’s now on clonidine) and a pdd-nos diagnosis— so now she officially has hypotonia, adhd, and pdd-nos— she has finally started toilet training!)

While they’re in preschool or sleeping, I run two businesses (frankly, the stress of making a full time income in part time hours while having two special needs kids is starting to get to me a bit, hence, needing the support of this group!)—-
