Organizing … Specialized!

Organizing…Specialized is group where we help each other with the home organizing challenges we face raising children with special needs. While our moderator is a Professional Organizer, she is not able to personally address each question raised, especially as the group grows. We can all share our tips, offer suggestions and help one another. Leslie will address as many questions as she can, but please remember she is our volunteer moderator.

Hoarding behaviors on the spectrum? (3 posts)

    As a result of shows on A&E tv, the term “hoarding” has made it into the general consciousness. It is even bantered about casually. Just the other day, a client commented she “hoards” cookie cutters. (In reality, she just had them all jumbled and couldn’t find what she needed!) I have recently become more aware of the challenge families are facing when their child (with a tendency toward obsessions) won’t “get rid” of extra toys. Is anyone facing this difficult challenge? What do you do about it?

    haha! i kid around telling people about my 9 year old id, apraxic, cp daughters hoarding! she holds onto every thing!! every once in awhile i clean out the mess. i try to do it when she’s not around so i dont upset her applecart. she seems fine with the every once in awhile mom clean up:)

    Anne, Thanks for sharing! (I missed seeing this reply until now for some reason.) I am glad she is okay with you cleaning out from time to time! Any insight you can share as to why she holds onto things? Or why she doesn’t seem to mind your occasional clean-ups?
