Growth Issues

Public Group active 9 months, 1 week ago ago

A group to talk about growth issues. They may be related to the growth hormone or happening for no reason. Maybe also a place for suggestions on healthy eating and how to help your child “grow”!

I would love recipes or just some ideas on how to help my son gain weight. He is almost four and a half and weighs about 31 lbs. He is actually a good eater and does like healthy foods. We often make almond milk smoothies that I add frozen fruit and flax seed oil to. But any other suggestions would be great!

Michele, mom to the “three peas in a pod” (two with a rare kidney disease); and a special education teacher, mostly work with children who are blind and visually impaired
    My three peas are:
Max, 10, ARPKD; Nate, 7, “healthy”; and Gabe 4, ARPKD

Mi Michele! Does he have any food allergies or restrictions? That’d help me know what direction to head with my recommendations… but in general, I add cheese or butter to almost everything DD eats. I saute her veggies in olive oil, I add cream or powdered whole milk to concentrate calories in her milk and smoothies. Trader Joe’s has a full-fat Greek yogurt that is awesome, and unflavored so you can add whatever he likes to it (maple syrup is DD’s favorite). I offer dips for everything from fruits and veggies (usually sunbutter- a peanut butter substitute) or a homemade buttermilk ranch-type dressing, and BBQ sauce or even spaghetti sauce for meats, pizzas, pasta, etc.

There are also calorie boosters like Benecal and Duocal that you add to food or drinks.

    Hi Sylvia,
Thanks for your response. Gabe doesn’t have any food allergies and no real restrictions but we do try to limit salt. I do add butter and olive oil a lot but like your suggestion of adding powdered whole milk. I will also try sunbutter. He doesn’t love peanut butter. We did try the calorie boosters but he didn’t like them.
    Thanks!

The powdered whole milk that I’ve found is called Nido, and is usually in the Mexican section of the grocery store. If you shop at Super Walmart, they carry a huge container of it in their bulk items too.
