Hi all…I know everyone is talking about how to help the calm factor in the morning! I had the pleasure of seeing Kirk speak last week and he had a lot of tips for just a calmer environment – most especially in the mornings! One thing he went into in great detail is that the more we RUSH them, the more they resist, but that it’s not necessarily out of defiance but can be out of anxiety for “intense” kids like ours. I hope he can stop by here and weigh in soon! If anyone is in Indianapolis…he’s headed there in the next week (24th I think?) so be sure to check out his website…he’s fantastic! And I think his sessions (usually a couple of hours) are free (the ones that I have seen advertised are!).

Well, from experience only (and my own at that) I can certainly attest to the more you rush the more they resist factor. It also seem that my oldest has gotten even more so. She is 10 now, nearly 11, and I am sure that hormones are also playing a role. She used to get up, eat and be out the door because she was anxious about being late. Now she takes more time and I end up being the anxious one. Breathe, breathe, breathe, I guess. (And the little one…she is just a rock. She sits. Period. Mornings….I don’t blame her, but unless she gets up an hour earlier – oh please NO! – there’s not just sit in the morning routine.)

When we rush, our kids resist our ANXIETY. Our anxiety tells them, “You can’t get ready fast enough or please me.” Besides, they wake up, it’s only 6:14am, and we’re in Crazy Mom or Freak Dad mode. So here are a few suggestions:
    1. Sit down on the side of the bed when you wake your kids. Just for a few seconds. Let them know you are in control of yourself, that they have woken to a calm world.
    2. Spark conversation by asking about their interests, NOT about school. “I heard there’s a new Star Wars movie coming out. Do you know what it’s about?” Now I’ve got the child talking. “Hey, why don’t you tell me more about it while we eat breakfast?” Connect first, then get compliance.
    3. Get your kids moving, give them a challenge. DO NOT begin with chores. “Hey Billy, I hid your favorite Lego firetruck in the backyard. Bet you can’t find it before I get breakfast ready!” The idea is to challenge them, get their brain focused on accomplishing a task, and getting them out the door.

Lots and lots of other practical strategies, but let’s begin here. On our Radio Show tonight, we’re going to talk about clothes and how to get your kids getting dressed more quickly. You can listen 24/7. Learn more at our website

Thanks, Kirk. Great tips, and I put them into action this morning (well, I didn’t hide anything in the backyard, but the rest I did). Worked very well. We got up early for walk to school day, had to eat and get out the door to meet the walk crew across the street, and everything was calm. I like it!
