I’m having a really hard time with this parenting stuff (again!). Everything we do is a fight – food, homework, brushing teeth, cleaning up, wearing socks, breathing……. I just don’t know how to stop the fighting. Why does everything have to be so hard??

I don’t know Andy. I wish that I had the perfect words to say that would help you out, but all I can do is shake my head in agreement. This life IS hard and sometimes with no relief in sight, but I am thankful for every single day. Hang in there.

I’m right there with you! What I’ve found the most helpful (still not perfect though) is to explain to the kids that I have the grumpies because we’ve had a rough day, and I’d really like a second chance or a do-over, but I need their help too, by them doing their best to work together to get the task done. Sometimes a few minutes apart or a short video like Fraggle Rock that we all enjoy, or even just a quick snack will allow us to regroup and try again.

Take each day for what it is and try to pick out one good thing every day. When my husband and I were in counseling, the therapist always asked how we were doing. My husband always replied that we were in a rough patch and things were crazy. I finally said, yes they are crazy, but that is not going to change. If my daughter was having a bad moment it immediately ruined my husbands entire day. I said if you continue to do this there will never be good moments or good days. I told him that this is our normal and we need to make the most of it. He has been better since then and realized what our normal is. We rejoice in the very simple and take what we can get. It may sound harsh but for us thats what gets us through the day.

Andy…how are things going? Better? Or just different? Sometimes I feel like things are better when actually they’ve changed and the newness doesn’t feel so awful. On the other things for us, when things spiral they spiral. We’re in an adjustment phase (6th grade for G and behind for Q).

    I hope things have improved.
