My son is pretty challenging and has been for a long time. I could go on about the reason but I want to get to bed tonight, so I’ll just say it involves…medical trauma, mental health issues, developmental delays, medical issues, and meds.

Over the years we’ve had behavior plans, (oh boy, so, so many) and for the first time in a long time we are feeling like he is stable. While his behavior isn’t perfect, it is so much better than it used to be! With proper med treatment, my son’s meltdowns have gone from hours long to minutes. Tonight he told me that his meltdown this morning was the result of testing and how much he was upset about it – stressed.

So delighted he talked about it. Such a major change for him. What celebrations do you have for you child? Or yourself? Because when I react properly in a meltdown situation, I feel pretty good and that’s a good celebration. That was not the case this morning unfortunately.

That is so great to hear! Celebrate every step!! and remember to give yourself a break, you can’t have the perfect reaction everytime, you deserve a meltdown sometimes too.

We had a good night last night too… and we haven’t had one in a while. It’s the good nights that get you through the long ones.

Andy, that is so true…I often hang on to the good days for a long time through all the bad ones. Happily our good days are slowly multiplying.

My eldest son was diagnosed very early on with Bipolar and Tourettes. In grade 3, he was kicked out of 3 schools in one year. Needless to say, life was a challenge. I am very proud to say that today, he is attending Queen’s University with a Principal’s scholarship and has maintained his status on the Dean’s list. He’s become a delightful, caring and resourceful young man. I give him 100% of the credit for turning his life around.

That is fantastic, Karyn!!!! I think we’re going to have to interview you for our Future Glimpse series!! (It’s a series from parents of adult children or from adult children themselves sharing a perspective that many of us with younger kids sorely need!
