Autism Support 1 week agoAre you going to travel this summer? I found some useful information in an article on the planning required for traveling with a child with a disability. Would you add something to this information? http://www.thespectrum.com/article/20120515/LIFESTYLE/205150312

I’ll friend y’all.
Wishing you all a happy 2012 free of meltdowns,…[Read more] -

Autism Support 4 months, 3 weeks agoOnce again, we are in a rough spot with my four year old. For a few weeks, he has been occasionally aggressive (usually grabbing or pulling hair), but since being home for break, he has been incredibly difficult. He attacks me and my husband during almost every interaction (diaper changes, getting dressed, etc) but also out of nowhere. Today he…[Read more]

Autism Support: 7 months, 4 weeks agoMy husband and I just recently started estate planning. We had a good conversation with a lawyer that is experienced in handling families of special needs kids. The number 1 reason I’ve put off doing this for so long is: We have no idea who to ask to be a guardian for Matthew if something [...]

Autism Support: 8 months agoBOTH my twins are on the spectrum now!
Reena was diagnosed this summer with both adhd and pdd-nos. Her autism is a million times different than her brother’s, which is why it took me years to recognize it as spectrum behavior. It was only via the adhd diagnosis process that I was clued in. how is everyone? -

Wow, this is so hard. We had similar behaviors in our home but not with autism. Rages, lashing out, damaging property and G was older but some of the things we did/tried and worked, at least temporarily.
- we did a lot of sensory input with him using cushions/pillows….woke him up that way and did it a few times a day (for “grounding”).…[Read more]
Thanks for the response Julia. The pillow squishes and a weighted lap pad worked a bit. Wesley was able to sleep in this morning (after another rough night) so today has been a bit better. He’s got ABA this afternoon, so we’ll see what happens when he has to work. How old was G when you started meds? I’ve thought about whether to try, but he’s…[Read more]
Very much thinking of you and hoping this might help: advice/examples from 3.5 years ago, when we’d engaged a behaviorist who specialized in violent behavior:
“…I reacted as I always do to [Leo's] violence towards me: neutrality, no reaction other than hand-over-hand placing his hands back at his side, and saying “Hands down,…[Read more]
Shannon- Thanks for this. Your post resonated with me. Wesley too can be the sweetest boy with the most amazing giggles but has this very aggressive side as well.
There seems to be an attention seeking part to this behavior which is not something we’re used to with Wesley. Fortunately, our behaviorist comes today so we can talk with her, though…[Read more]
it might be more self stimmy than attention seeking. My son has similar issues and we’re planning to begin medicating in February– just trying to make it till then. Our kids are the same age—- my twins turn 5 on Jan 9th. I’ve already got his twin on meds and the ONLY reason I hadn’t yet started him is because I KNEW his diagnosis but I…[Read more]
