Adulthood, Independence & Special Needs 4 months, 2 weeks agoHi I am new to this site. I have an adult daughter diagnosed with a developmental disability and bipolar disorder (Amber). She lives with us and we are fine with that. Her older sister (Jamie) wants her to live with her when we are unable to take care of her anymore. Amber wants to live with us. We have some family members who think Amber…[Read more]

Adulthood, Independence & Special Needs 8 months, 1 week agoWell my “greatest fear” was realized. At 18.5yrs, my son moved out (in February) to bounce from friend to friend’s house. By March he’d decided to stop taking all his meds. He did manage to graduate high school (barely, but he’s special ed so they gave him a LOT of leeway). Within days of graduation, he’d moved to another state and in…[Read more]

Ohhhh I am so sorry – what a nightmare. I hope you have the support of the family and friends to help you through this. And will say a prayer that the court will actually offer through the mental health system as well. Good luck!!!!

Adulthood, Independence & Special Needs: 2 years, 4 months agoI would love for my son to still live with us, but also have some independence. I would love for him to have friends of his own, too. He does in school now, and even has a best friend. I hope he has this when he is older, too.

Adulthood, Independence & Special Needs: 2 years, 4 months agoOn paper my children are CAPABLE of being productive, successful members of society. Technically they COULD go to college, get a job, and have healthy relationships. However my kids have so many issues that the odds of them actually being able to do this are astronomically against it. I don’t want to hold them back by saying they can’t, but…[Read more]

I know this has been posted a long time ago- hopefully you’ll find this helpful. What if they failed? What if you told them they could go try anything and they could always know that you would be there for them no matter what? My kids floundered. My youngest daughter for 3 years and my son for 6 until they figured out life for themselves. My…[Read more]

Adulthood, Independence & Special Needs: 2 years, 4 months agoMy children are not capable of living on their own, but we’re unable to get them diagnosed with anything that will get them the support they need to make it in the “real world.” Because of their attachment issues they are unable to trust us enough to stay home with us and let us help [...]

Cheryl, this is SO hard because I think other family & friends worry about those of us that are in the trenches because they can’t picture it. I have two young kids with special needs and I help an adult nephew with disabilities. I’m not his guardian but might as well be. I think if Amber does well living with you and you is close with Jamie and…[Read more]
Thank You Julia. We agree, our children come first. Amber attends a day program she enjoys. She works and gets a small paycheck and also they have classes for living skills. She enjoys this. We just want Amber to live a fulfilllig life like everyone else does and give her some choices. Where she lives should be one of them. I want to help…[Read more]
