Around the Community

What a busy week. I know I don’t have to tell you how close we are to the holidays. It’s a little overwhelming!

In my world, I had some really big excitement. My daughter and I traveled to Chicago to build her a new prosthetic arm. It’s really cool and she’s using it a bit every day. It’s also quite beautiful! Her new “elbow arm” is covered with polka dots and Hello Kitty. She also got a new paddle to help swim better. We’ll see how Jordan responds to the options as we try to get our lives back to normal! If you’re interested, I documented parts of our trip on our Born Just Right blog. I kind of gave a live listing of events on our Facebook page.

Here on Support for Special Needs, there were some pretty awesome posts and conversation. I think two posts stand out the most to me. First, Shannon Dingle made a guest appearance and shared how she sees disability and its place in the Christian community. Even more interesting is the conversation that is growing in the comments section. I also think it’s worth taking the time to read Chrisa Hickey‘s ongoing perspective of how her family had to put their son into residential care. Her honesty and perspective is something you can’t find in a lot of places online. I really appreciate her writing.

New Members
In the last week we’ve added five new members! Welcome everyone! I’d love to introduce you to one of our new members.

First, I’d like to introduce everyone to mommahopeful who is also known as Heather on Twitter. She has a site called The Hopeful Elephant. I spent some time reading and she has some great perspective on early interventions for her son. It also sounds like her family is moving soon. Good luck!

I’d love to introduce more of our members, but most did not leave enough information for me to share. If you are new, please feel free to fill out your biographies a little bit more and I can introduce you to everyone!

Community Conversations
A usual, our groups continue to be wonderful support for members of this site. There are public and private groups to join. If you haven’t tried joining and group and chatting, try it this upcoming week! One conversation of note is in the Caregiver Stress page. You’ll find that group to be really supportive. This week there was a conversation called “This parenting stuff is hard!” If you have any supportive words for Andy, I’m sure she’d appreciate it.

On Twitter a conversation ensued about all the foster care support needing to extend beyond the holidays to  year round. It stemmed from community member Marisa brought up the fact that he found out that girls were requesting tampons for the holidays. A Twitter conversation lead to a group (private, just ask to join) for us to brainstorm ways to get kids in foster care support for toiletries year round. Support for Kids in Care. Join us.

Remember to join our Organizing…Specialized group. Our new moderator is a professional who is giving us great tips all the time! Join us there and share your questions and input. Join Leslie Gail and check out her site. While you’re there, thank her for taking on our group.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and week ahead.
