Classes let kids help kids
Some students in the preschool class lacked the motor skills to tap their sticks together in time to “When the Saints Go Marching In,” including 4-year-old Christopher Garcia, who sat in his wheelchair with a stick in his lap.
Drawn by that, Olivia DeNight – only 3 years old and unprompted – walked over and tapped one of her sticks in time to the music against the stick in Christopher’s lap, involving him in the activity.
Christopher’s eyes lit up.
“Isn’t that wonderful?” teacher Debbie Nuss said of Olivia’s gesture. “It is that unconditional acceptance, that genuine compassion of reaching out. I see it all the time. Every time I walk in here, I know I’m going to see it.”
