State disabilities agency bids goodbye to the “R” word

Gov. David Paterson signed legislation today that changes the name of the state Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities to the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities and remove the term “mental retardation” from New York statutes and regulations. The new law takes effect immediately, but the name change will be implemented gradually to save money.
